My Jewish Friends: To whom do you give tzedakah?
Q. I was in no position to give anything for a looong time, but after a small influx of money, I've decided to donate to Chabad in memory of the couple in Mumbai. Do you give it out on the street? Donate to a secular organization? Send checks to your shul? I don't mean to pry, I'm just new to the custom and I'm feeling out my comfort level with it. I normally do volunteer work (mainly involved in teaching adults to read at the Central Library here in Los Angeles), and I guess my discomfort w/ giving money on the street is that old creeping feeling that illicit things will be done w/ the money (I'm perfectly aware that only a small percentage use drugs and are mostly mentally ill instead). Like I said, I want to give the money to… [cont.]

A. I don't give on the street. I want the money well used, & think those people begging would be better served through organizations set up to evaluate their medical needs that are putting them there in the first place. I do my giving 1-2x a year by sitting down & figuring it out. That way I can feel less guilty with the endless calls that come into my house & other requests. I don't give to call centers for organizations & make sure they are up&up with decent percent use of the money. That said, most of my donations go to the UJA, United Jewish Appeal which is done by the Federation in each community though supersunday call-a-thons. About 1/2 the money will go to the whole collection of Jewish social service organizations in the area… [cont.]
