An organization (or organisation — see spelling differences) is a social arrangement which pursues collective goals, controls its own performance, and has a boundary separating it from its environment. The word itself is derived from the Greek word organon, itself derived from the better-known word ergon.

In the social sciences, organizations are the object of analysis for a number of disciplines, such as sociology, economics, political science, psychology, management, and organizational communication. In more specific contexts, particularly for sociologists, the term "institution" may be preferred. The broader analysis of organizations is commonly referred to as organizational studies, organizational behavior or organization analysis. A number of different theories and perspectives exist, some of which are compatible,

  • Organization – process-related: an entity is being (re-)organized (organization as task or action).
  • Organization – functional: organization as a function of how entities like businesses or state authorities are used (organization as a permanent structure).
  • Organization – institutional: an entity is an organization (organization as an actual purposeful structure within a social context)

How can I effect change within an organisation?
Q. I need to help change my work organisation. We need strong leadership and a positive attitude during a time of uncertainty. What things can I do to help drive this change and create a better working environment with stronger leaders and better managers?
Asked by Thomas T - Tue Sep 19 12:21:07 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is a big lack of information here. If the leaders and mangers report to you it is your responsibilty to instigate the change you want from your managers or change your managers. Everything has to be lead from the front, motivation, determination and strategy that everyone understands. So it is up to you to motivate to strategise from the info and resources you have or call upon consultants. It is also your role to see that determination is fed down the line of operation. To do this you have to give people a goal to work to, a reason to do it. If this is not your positon in the company you need to be putting your ideas forward to the people whose responsibility it is ( can be a dangerous game as people read into it things that… [cont.]

How do I set up a non profit organisation?
Q. I am looking to set up a charity, however it may not meet the conditions required so therefore I am looking to set up a not for profit organisation first/instead. However I have no idea on how to start this, any useful advice and tips would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

A. 2 choices: Trust or Company Limited by Guarantee. You'll need some legal advice for either. A Trust is set up with a deed that sets out what you do and how you do it. A solicitor will have a draft that you just need to alter to show what you're planning to do. You need between 2 and 4 trustees and the deed includes details of how new trustees are appointed. A Company needs Articles and a Memorandum of Association. That's a bit more specialised, but a solicitor should know how to get hold of a specimen set. You register these with Companies House and you're away. The company has a number of members who guarantee to pay a set amount of the company's debts, but don't get a dividend. There is an annual general meeting at which the… [cont.]

I hve a charity organisation, now building a website. Any suggestions on how to make it capturing for audience?
Q. I am trying to see if my readers can pick interest in contributing and supporting the organisation. Its mainly to help eradicate poverty in developing countries. I need good information and a way to make the website user friendly and also at the same time different from the others. Any advice will highly be appreciated many thanks .

A. First define who your audience is. Once you know that, you can build a site that's much more appealing to them. For example, people over 40 will generally respond differently to those under 25. What is really different about what you're doing from all the other charity sites with similar aims? There needs to be a compelling reason for people to support your charity over the others. What's the aim of the site? Do you want people to donate money? Are you trying to raise awareness of poverty? Do you want volunteers? Do you want to stimulate discussion? I know there's a lot of questions here, rather than answers to your questions but until you're clear on these you'll have difficulty putting together something that achieves its… [cont.]
