Moses Maimonides, also known as Rambam, was a preeminent medieval Jewish philosopher; one of the greatest Torah scholars of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba, Spain on Passover Eve, 1135, and died in Egypt on 20th Tevet, December 12, 1204. He worked as a rabbi, physician and philosopher in Morocco and Egypt. With the contemporary Muslim philosopher Averroes, he promoted and developed the philosophical tradition of Aristotle, which gave both men prominent and controversial influence in the West, where Aristotelian thought had not been known widely. Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas were notable Western readers of Maimonides.

Although his writings on Jewish law and ethics met with opposition during his life, he was posthumously acknowledged to be one of the foremost rabbinical arbiters and philosophers in Jewish history, his copious work a cornerstone of Jewish scholarship, His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah still carries canonical authority as a codification of Talmudic law.

Jews, did Maimonides or anyone else recommend practices to help one move up the levels of charity?
Q. I know the obvious answer is "just do it." I'm wondering about meditations or similar things to support "just do it."
Asked by Citizen of the Cosmos - Mon Mar 16 12:26:54 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Charity is an action. The levels are not states of being, but a consideration of how valuable a certain action is. It would be better to do one unwilling act of known charity, than to delay in effort to empower a fellow human being who does not know you, and risk not completing the act. To worry about the level is to negate the deed. Do the deed as best you can and it will already be the highest level possible for that deed.

Jews, how do you feel about black people? The same as Maimonides? 1 of the best Jewish philosophers in history?
Q. "(Maimonides) Apart from his work on the codification of the Talmud, he was also a philosopher and his Guide to the Perplexed is justly considered to be the greatest work of Jewish religious philosophy and is widely read and used even today. Unfortunately, in addition to his attitude towards non-Jews generally and Christians in particular, Maimonides was also an anti-Black racist. Towards the end of the Guide, in a crucial chapter (book III, chapter 51) he discusses how various sections of humanity can attain the supreme religious value, the true worship of God. Among those who are incapable of even approaching this are: 'Some of the Turks [i.e., the Mongol race] and the nomads in the North, and the Blacks and the nomads in the South, and… [cont.]

Can anyone name some good apartment buildings in Brooklyn? I need to find somewhere to live!?
Q. I'm looking for a place to live in Brooklyn, somewhere near Maimonides hospital, or on the M or D subway line. Also, is Ditmas park a decent place?
Asked by Dr. Neema - Mon Jul 23 20:07:55 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I know a number of people who like Ditmas Park. There aren't a lot of huge apt. buildings in Brooklyn -- you're unlikely to find a home in a specific recommended building. Go by block or neighborhood instead.
