What are some charities that I can work with my club to contribute to?
Q. I would like to keep in localized to North Carolina, but any good charity would be suitable. We are a club in high school that wants to volunteer and donate to charities, but want to support the smaller ones!

A. Maggie. I'm so glad you're in the spirit of doing good for others. I was just about to graduate from college with a degree in biochemistry, when i got hurt at work, and consequently couldn't work, couldn't pay my bills, couldn't go to school, got illegally evicted from my apt. and then became homeless. I had a "half-way" ;-) normal upbringing, and i was about to be making $50,000/yr. minimum when all my dreams were shattered by a stupid accident. When i was homeless, I was given food 3 times a day, given clothes and toiletries, given shelter (we had 17 snow storms that winter), transportation to doctors appointments and love and support by United Way agencies where I lived. What are some good active charities that kids can do?
Q. What are some good charities that I can not donate money too, but time and hands, like building a garden, or houses, or reading books to kids, something active? Ones that kids can do, at least ones that are 11? I like doing things for kids, and I'm really smart, I don;t like doing many things outside, but I wouldn't mind.

A. Check with your local hospitals, library, family shelters, etc. to see what their guidelines are on whether you have to have a parent/guardian present with you or just their permission. At places like that, there would be plenty of opportunities to read, play games or make crafts. Good for you for wanting to donate your time - I think it's wonderful to see young kids thinking of others instead of themselves. Good luck.

How much of the money donated charities such as UNICEF actually goes towards the people it is intended for?
Q. I've heard some really negative things today about high profile charities, and how most of the money donated to them goes to the people who run them, with less than half the of the funds reaching the poor and needy. Can someone help me out here? Thank you

A. I watched a serious documentary some years ago about Charity donations..(something like Panorama on the BBC) and it was discovered that (ALLEGEDLY).. for every 1-stg donated 0.90p went on Admin and 10p actually went towards what people THOUGHT they were donating to - ie research, help,aid.. etc personally... i never give money to any main-Stream charity... ie charities that have high street shops such as cancer, heart, strokes, MIND.. etc or ANY charity that advertises on tv I do give to riding for the disabled...ie hay/straw food for the horses. In my mind, that is useful. The animals are getting the benefit from my donation, and children and disabled adults are then benefitting from Riding the ponies and horses. I do the same for cat… [cont.]
