What would be something crazy, but reasonable to do for charity?
Q. Hi, my name is Ian and I am looking to do something for charity; like the title says, something crazy so people will want to donate, but something reasonable. I am an ordinary person, but I have a huge heart and want to go through something similar to the struggles of the people who the profits will go to face every day. I would really like to place my time, energy, and heart in place of theirs for a day, so maybe they can live more comfortably a moment. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

If I volunteer for charity work in Palestine what actual dangers could I face?
Q. I want actual, real threats to my safety, and informed answers only please. I have heard that the Palestinians themselves will value you, the extremists may either be the same or see you as another potential hostage despite your good work, and the Israelis will act indifferently unless, to put it bluntly, an Israeli soldier sees fit to use you for target practice. Please serious, informed answers only please. I am only thinking of doing this, so any resources would also be gratefully received. Thanks!

A. I have never heard of Palestinians kidnapping anyone who is living amongst them and helping out in the community. The biggest threat you face would be being caught in the crossfire of some Israeli raid battling with the locals, or if you are in the wrong place you could get hit by an Israeli shell. I'm not saying Palestinians are innocent, but if you live in a Palestinian area, it would be Israeli weapons which would kill you. If you are an American you might have a few problems. If you are a woman dress very conservatively and you will have fewer problems. People forget that Palestinians have fairly modern attitudes because they also believe they are fighting for survival and are prone to acts of violence in their perceived national self-d [cont.]

What charity organization should I volunteer for?
Q. Hey, I've got a lot of time on my hands at the moment and really want to put it to better use rather than spending day watching films, facebook, msn etc. I am wondering what charity I should perhaps look into volunteering for. There are 2 small towns near me with various shops easy to get too or a big variety in the city centre. Is there any charities really crying out for help? Im also wondering what overseas charity organisations there are that need volunteers? Thanks

How do you check if a charity is a scam?
Q. I want to donate money to charity. I've made recent donations to UNICEF, Heal Africa and Smile Train. However I have read a recent article saying that there are some lowlifes who make fake charities and send out emails asking for money. I want to know which charities are good and how to tell if a charity is real. Names would be nice.

A. You have to do a bit of research about the organizations you are considering donating to. First off, I do not respond to e-mails or phone calls from people or groups that I did not initiate the contact with; I flat out refuse to donate to any group that does cold calls. I am also very wary of doing an internet search (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc) in search of a cause or charity because scammers can put up fake websites. You can use your local Better Business Bureau, State Attorneys General Office, and State consumer protection department to check out charities that operate in your local area. The Guidestar website listed in a previous answer is a good source of information on Charities. I've posted other good websites in the Source section.… [cont.]

How do you start a charity?
Q. Last week my colleagues and I each pitched in some money to play the lottery. we were asking each other whatwe'd do with the money if we won. I said I'd keep a fourth for myself and use the other 3/4s to start 3 charities. Although I didn't win the lottery I kinda still want to start the 3 charities. One is a scholarship, the other is a research fund, the other is a pediatric charity. The problem is I need $10 million to start each charity. I was going to put the money in a high yield savings account or buy bonds and whatever interest is received will be the money that goes to the cause. that way I can still give even after I'm long dead. Since no one is going to write such a huge check without proof how do you start a charity? I know… [cont.]

Where can I find a charity to donate money for mosquito nets and fresh water?
Q. Last year I found a website for a charity that basically "purchased" mosquito nets, water, blankets, etc with the donations. So, you knew exactly what the charity could get with the money. I didn't have the money last year, but I do this year and would like to donate in my family's name for Christmas presents. Basically, saying each member bought a mosquito net for a needy family or something like that. Where can I find a charity that does something like this??

How does the person hosting a charity event make money?
Q. I'm confused on how the person that is hosting a charity event would make their money. For example: Let's say someone's hosting a casino charity event, and all the money that the people loose goes to the cause. So how does the person that host's the event make any money? Or doesn't he? Does he just do it to get brownie points for his karma? But then how do big charity organizations make their money, who pays them? And wouldn't the people loose many because they have to spend the money to rent all the game tables?

A. The person operating the event is a volunteer and 100% of money raised goes to the charity or they are a professional fundraiser that contracted with the charity for a percentage of the proceeds. Some take as much as 60%

When throwing a charity event, are you supposed to give them all the money?
Q. I'm planning an art show for later in the year. It will consist of 30-35 artists work and I would like to have it as a charity event, but I was only going to have a percentage of the money from any purchased art go to the charity and the rest would go to the artists. Is that wrong? How do these things usually work? I don't wanna look like a schmuck especially since there are some pretty big celebrities associated with the charity I'm considering.

A. As long as you advertise what percentage is for charity. Your ads could say 25% of all proceeds will be donated to "Name Your Charity" Make sure you have the written permission of the charity to collect monies in their name

Is the charity from religion worth the irrationality from it?
Q. I wanted to know what you guys think. Would you rather have more people doing good and donating to charity from belief in an afterlife and rewards, or maybe a little less but a more rational and freethinking society. I think it's worth it, and we can try to push charity more.

A. There's a well worn saying to cover that question. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a life time. Give a man religion and he'll starve to death praying for a fish.

A. The Salvation Army. I have worked with different organizations in local community service. The Salvation Army accepts all, helps all, and is on the scene quickly and quietly. They don't spend all their funds on advertising, their volunteers just get there and get to work. I am proud to have worked with them for over 7 years. I'm a high school student, and in addition to wanting to help, I was wondering if I would get charity credits for it. if it helps... I live in Virginia, near Leesburg! A. You will need to book a venue. Your going to have to pay up front. Book local bands and shoot for them to volunteer there time as opposed to paying for their appearences. Sell tickets in advance to help cover the cost of the venue, sell tickets at the door but at a higher rate that way you actually make a profit. Your going to need to check with a soda/water company and see if they have fundraising programs, this way you can offer beverages and make a profit. If you plan on making this a yearly event your profits need to be the seed money to get the one for next year going AND enough to donate to a charity. Think about your charity also. Is there a large concern in your community for what you picked out? Most often it's the local… [cont.]
