A. Has to be Rachel Carson. Her book, Silent Spring, was instrumental in getting the United States (which is often behind - as far as leading nations - in this type of legislation) to ban certain pesticides. Wikipedia mentions that she "was an American marine biologist and nature writer whose landmark book, Silent Spring, is often credited with having launched the global environmental movement. "
