Why did the united states support the nationalist party rather than the communist party during the civil war?
Q. Why did the united states support the nationalist party rather than the Communist party during the civil war in China? I'm not quite sure thank you in advance!

A. The US saw China as a potential extension of Communist Russia, and thus a Communist China would be a factor in the Cold War. Also, the prevailing American concept of restricting Communism was military 'containment' - that is, surrounding Russia with states that would be hostile to the spread of Communism. A Communist China would interfere with this containment policy.
